Choosing properly certified and tested lighting is an important part of keeping your home and family safe. Always check which type of lighting you are buying to make sure it is designed to work for your space. By understanding what UL listed lighting is, it will make this process much easier.

What is UL Lighting?

UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories, an independent product safety certification organization. UL tests lighting and other electrical equipment to verify the safety of the products and then assigns the products to one of three major categories that determine where to use the product safely.

  • Dry Locations- Dry locations are indoors and well ventilated such as kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms. Lighting in this category will typically be labeled just “UL Listed.”

  • Damp Locations- Lighting in this category can be in interior or exterior locations that are periodically damp from condensation such as pool areas and showers.

  • Wet Locations- Lighting in this category is deemed safe for interior and exterior areas where the product will be in direct contact with water such as on uncovered decks, patios, or exterior walls.
