What You’ll Need:
Duvet cover
Bed or other flat surface
STEP 1: TURN THE DUVET COVER INSIDE OUT
First, wash your duvet cover so you’re starting fresh. Then turn it inside out and lay it on your bed with the opening at the bottom. You want to make sure your duvet is laying flat, so now’s the time to smooth out any wrinkles.
STEP 2: TOP THE DUVET COVER WITH THE INSERT
Next, lay your duvet insert right on top of your duvet cover and adjust the placement until all four corners match up. If your duvet cover has ties or buttons, use them to attach your cover to the duvet.
STEP 3: ROLL BOTH LAYERS DOWN
After all of your corners are attached, just roll the two layers together, all the way down to the foot of the bed, adjusting any lumps as you go.
STEP 4: TURN EVERYTHING RIGHT SIDE OUT
When you get to the bottom, find the opening. Grab the bottom layer and pull it under and up so that it goes over the end of your rolled-up duvet, turning it right side out.
STEP 5: UNROLL IT
Now, this is the really magical part. Start to unroll and your bed is practically making itself! When you’re done, seal up the bottom with a button or zip closure.

How to Choose a Duvet
STEP 1: FOCUS ON FABRICATION
When looking at duvet inserts, there are two factors to consider: material and weight. Down inserts provide a lofty sensation and superior heat regulation. If you’re looking for a luxurious feel, down is the premium choice. For those who have allergies or want something vegan-friendly, hypoallergenic down-alternative inserts offer a similar feel by using microfiber clusters instead of down.
STEP 2: FIND THE PERFECT WEIGHT
Heavyweight inserts are perfect for cold sleepers and chilly climates, and they also give your bedding an extra-plush look. If you're in a warmer environment, consider a lightweight insert instead. Medium-weight ones are safe bets for year-round use. Remember that duvet inserts are easy to change, so don't be afraid to choose different options for summer and winter.
STEP 3: SELECT A MATERIAL FOR YOUR COVER
Once you have a duvet insert, select the right type of cover to protect it. The first consideration should be comfort. Choosing the right material for your duvet cover ensures you won't get too warm or cold during the night. If you’re not sure what material to choose, think of your favorite shirt. If it’s linen, a linen duvet is a great choice. If it’s cotton, opt for a cotton duvet.
STEP 4: DISCOVER YOUR DUVET COVER STYLE
Next, figure out the vibe you love. For a timeless hotel feel, opt for an all-white duvet cover. It gives the room an airy, luxurious look. Prefer a cozy aesthetic? Look for a dark one instead. Shades of deep blue or green in rich textures will make the bed feel like a restful retreat and add a layer of visual interest to the room's design. If you're concerned that kids or pets might bring messes into the bedroom, look for a patterned duvet cover. Not only will a print help conceal stains and fur, but it can also elevate the style of the room. Similarly, seek a cover with a smooth surface to prevent the risk of claws snagging embroidered designs.
