sofa styles
First step on your sofa buying guide list is style. Tailored to tufted—every sofa style tells a unique story. Choose a
look that reflects your home’s overall aesthetic or contrasts with your decor in a complementary way.
-
Track Arm Sofa
Clean, straight lines and squared angles
look tailored and contemporary in any
space. With no curves to take up extra
room, a track arm sofa is a smart choice
for small spaces. -
Armless Sofa
Maximize a small space with this sleek,
minimalist shape. Whether used as a
standalone piece or as part of a sectional,
an armless sofa fits seamlessly in a
modern-casual living room. -
Chesterfield
The definition of a timeless classic. A
Chesterfield sofa is known for its
tufted sofa back and rolled arms that sit at
the same height as the backrest. Works
well with a traditional aesthetic. -
Pillow Back Sofa
Pillow back sofas come outfitted with an
assortment of large pillows rather than
fitted cushions. Generally these pillows are
not attached to the back of the couch and
can be arranged however you like. -
Curved Back Sofa
Bold, modern and trending now. Curved
back sofas are a statement piece, so treat
it like one. Float it in the middle of the
room to show off its curves and soften a
room full of right angles. -
Tight Back Sofa
Form-fitted and cushionless, a tight back
sofa is a low-maintenance style featuring
an upright, upholstered backrest for a tidy
look that’s always company-ready. Makes
a great backdrop for throw pillows. -
Pro Tip
If you like the look of a tight-
back sofa but want a more
plush feel, consider layering it
with plenty of throw pillows. -
Low Profile Sofa
Just as comfy as they are cool. Sitting low
and ultra-loungeable, low profile sofas are
a modern style that creates an airy, casual
vibe and can make your room appear
taller. Good for grounding smaller spaces. -
Roll Arm Sofa
Classic and always in style. Rolled
armrests soften a roll arm sofa’s lines for a
more graceful look that works with any
aesthetic, from modern to farmhouse. An
added plus– it makes for an extra-comfy
spot to rest your head. -
Slope Arm Sofa
Starting at the top of the backrest, a sofa with
gently sloped arms makes a more curved
silhouette for added comfort so you can kick
back and relax. Dress up a slope arm sofa
with decorative throw pillows or keep it clean
and let your sofa be the star. -
Pillow Arm Sofa
The epitome of cozy, laid-back style. A
pillow arm sofa lends a more casual vibe
with its plump cushions draped over each
armrest for optimal lounging, napping and
snuggling. Works great if you prefer a
more plush feel.
sofa types & sizes
Next, think about function. How will you be using your sofa—in a formal sitting room or for all-day lounging
with the fam? Comfort also comes into play. Do you want it to feel plush and cozy or firm and upright?
-
Small Sofa
A small sofa is the same silhouette as a
full-size sofa, but with less depth and
length to maximize the room in a smaller
space. The term “apartment sofa” is
another way we say “small sofa.” -
Loveseat
Working with a cozier living room? Try a
loveseat. Designed in a shorter length,
loveseats are made to comfortably sit two
people. This style is often paired with a sofa
and arranged in an L-shaped configuration. -
Sectional Sofa
Sectional sofas are modular, multi-piece
sofas that can be arranged in a number of
configurations. A good option for large
family rooms and spaces where multiple
people (and pets!) gather to unwind. -
Bench Seat Sofa
Characterized by one long, seamless
cushion running the length of the sofa.
Bench seat sofas are good for those wanting a
cleaner look. No cracks between cushions
means a more comfortable seat. -
Sleeper Sofa
Sleeper sofas unfold to reveal a mattress,
perfect for overnight guests. Mattresses
may be foam or air-filled, and have
evolved to be much more comfortable
than they once were. Dress it up with
fitted sheets and a plush duvet. -
Pro Tip
Width determines how many
people can comfortably sit,
depth impacts posture and height
dictates whether or not your feet
will rest on the ground.
best sofa fabrics & materials
The final step? Fabric. Not only does a sofa’s upholstery play a role in the appearance of your living room, it
contributes to function and comfort. Factors like texture and stain resistance should be top of mind.

What is a sectional sofa?
Sectional sofas are modular, multi-piece sofas that can be arranged in a number of configurations and can come in many different shapes and sizes. For instance, a loveseat-chaise lounge combination is a comfortable setup for smaller spaces, while an L- or U-shaped design built with sofas and corner chairs is ideal for spacious open floor plans. This type of sofa is a good option for large family rooms and spaces where multiple people (and pets!) gather to unwind. Learn more about our sectional sofas.
What is a couch frame?
The frame is the foundation of your sofa. It supports the entire structure, plus all of the people sitting on it. Most of our collections include a wooden sofa frame or metal frame. Many of our frames are constructed with FSC-certified wood, meaning it comes from forests certified to be responsibly managed, environmentally sound and socially beneficial.
How do I wash sofa slipcovers?
First, check your sofa's care instructions and cleaning code. Some slipcovers can go into a washing machine on the gentle cycle, and others need to be hand-washed. Using cold water and a mild detergent, wash your slipcover on the gentle cycle, making sure not to use detergent with bleach. Tumble dry on low or check the care instructions to air dry and prevent shrinking. Check out our slipcover collections for more information.
How do I clean a couch?
It depends on the upholstery or material type. If you have a leather couch, use leather soap and conditioner to keep it looking fresh. If your couch is made of fabric that can be cleaned with a water-based cleaner, try using steam to loosen up dirt and stains. For busy households with performance fabric sofas, a simple spot clean should do. Each of our upholstery fabrics and leathers comes with an industry standard cleaning code that tells you how to treat spills and stains.
How do I measure a room for a couch?
To measure a sofa for delivery, compare your furniture measurements to the dimensions of your hallways, doorways and the room your sofa will sit in. Don’t forget to take rug size into consideration along with stairwell banisters, wall fixtures and ceilings. By doing this, you’ll be able to see whether the furniture needs to come in at an angle or if it will fit straight through. For complete instructions, check out our how-to guide on measuring furniture for delivery.
How do I measure a sectional sofa?
To measure a sectional sofa, you will need to find the overall width and the overall length. Think of the overall width as the backside (or the side that sits up against the wall). The overall length will be the side of the sofa that protrudes from the wall. Recording length, width and height will be the baseline for what sectional size you can comfortably fit in the room. Don’t forget to take into consideration the furniture that will be around the sectional, like rugs, coffee tables and end tables.
How do I choose the right sofa seat depth?
Think about how you will be using the space. Sofas with shorter seat depths have a more formal or upright feel and can be easier to stand up from, Deeper sofa seats encourage lounging and allow plenty of room to stretch out or snuggle up.
How do I protect a fabric couch?
With simple and regular care, your sofa should be right at home for many years to come. Rotate cushions and pillows weekly to distribute wear. Vacuum upholstery weekly using the upholstery attachment and crevice tool of your vacuum to remove loose particles. To prevent possible “bleeding” of ink onto fabric, do not leave newspapers or other printed materials lying on upholstery. Take special care when spraying household chemicals and commercial products near upholstery. The best way to minimize stains on fabric is to pretreat it with an upholstery protector, like Scotchgard. Another option is to cover your couch with a slipcover, which can easily go into a washing machine. If you have pets or kids, consider a performance fabric sofa that can stand up to stains and regular wear.
What is suspension in a sofa?
Your sofa’s suspension system can have a big impact on comfort and support. Suspension is used within the sofa to absorb shock and provide firmness and elasticity to the seat. There are different types, such as coil spring suspension or web suspension.
What does FSC®-certified mean?
Sofas that are FSC®-certified are made with wood from forests certified to be responsibly managed, environmentally sound and socially beneficial. Look for the FSC®-certified icon throughout our furniture collections.
What are the best types of sofa cushions?
Most sofa cushions are filled with feathers, foam or polyester fibers. The best type of couch seat cushion depends on how you like to lounge—do you prefer soft and cushy? Try a pillow back sofa. Would you like something a little more tailored? A tight back sofa might be right for you. Do you like the traditional look? Try a couch cushion back with perfectly placed tufts.
