summary
Nothing could be easier than a glazed ham. It is so flavorful—not to mention a great showpiece for a buffet—and the sweet glaze adds flavor while taming the natural saltiness of the meat. When you buy a ham, it will likely come with a glaze packet, but making your own is so much better and this one is a snap. The great thing about ham is that it’s mostly hands-off cooking and the results are versatile. This orange honey-glazed ham can be served simply sliced, on biscuits or on rolls with mustard.
ingredients
- 1 fully cooked, bone-in, spiral-cut ham (6-7 pounds)
- ¾ cup honey
- ¾ cup orange marmalade
- ¼ cup tightly packed light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
directions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan.
- Add the honey, orange marmalade, brown sugar and Dijon mustard to a small pan and set over medium heat. Stirring the glaze, cook until well combined and the sugar has melted. Brush ⅓ of the glaze all over the ham, and transfer the roasting pan to the oven. After 20 minutes, remove the ham from the oven and brush ½ of the remaining glaze all over the ham. Bake the ham for 20 more minutes. Once again remove the ham from the oven and brush with the rest of the glaze. Place the ham back into the oven and bake until the internal temperature reaches 140°F, about 30-40 more minutes.
- Place the glazed ham on a serving platter and serve at once.
notes
You can customize this glaze in so many ways: Add a tablespoon of Sriracha, try apricot or apple jam, add chopped fresh rosemary or mix in warming spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon.
In general you want to plan on ⅓ pound of ham per person, or ½ pound per person if your ham is bone-in. But leftover ham is so great for sandwiches so err on the side of too much!
Sliced meat can be served at room temperature, so if oven-space is at a premium with your menu, make this recipe well ahead and loosely tent with aluminum foil.
A spicy mustard or aioli is a great serving accompaniment to this ham to counterbalance the sweetness of the glaze.
