summary
Every holiday table deserves one showstopping centerpiece as the main course. This mustard-glazed ham is not only delicious, but it’s also incredibly easy with just five minutes of prep time. The wonderful thing about smoked meat like this is that it doesn’t need to be served piping hot out of the oven, making it easy for you to relax regarding dinner timing.
ingredients
- 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
- ½ cup Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Juice of 1 orange
- 1 6–7 lb. fully cooked smoked ham, boneless or bone-in
- Pea shoots and watermelon radishes for garnish, if desired
directions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F.
- Stir together the brown sugar, Dijon mustard, cayenne and orange juice and set aside.
- Remove skin from ham, then score the ham in a zigzag or crosshatch pattern. Place ham on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Transfer to the oven and bake for 1 hour. Remove the ham from the oven and brush with half of the brown sugar glaze. Return the ham to the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Once again, remove the ham from the oven and brush with the remaining brown sugar glaze. Transfer back to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes. Allow the mustard-glazed ham to sit at room temperature until you are ready to carve, garnish (if desired) and serve.
notes
Note: When you purchase a smoked ham, it will already be fully cooked. You are simply rewarming the ham and adding a flavorful glaze. If you would like the glaze to harden, you can place the ham under the broiler for just a few minutes (be careful not to burn!). The cayenne adds a bit of a zing to this recipe and is a great way to counterbalance the sweetness from the brown sugar and the acidity of the orange. But if you have guests that are sensitive to heat, you can cut the cayenne quantity in half or leave it out altogether.
