summary
Infused with rosemary, this blood orange cocktail is spiked with bourbon and fizzed with sparkling water. As delicious as it is beautiful, the spritz is garnished with fresh rosemary sprigs and blood orange slices. An easy recipe that’s super customizable, the blood orange rosemary spritz can be made with any spirit of your choosing or served as a flavorful non-alcoholic mocktail.
ingredients
- 3 ounces fresh blood orange juice
- 1½ ounces bourbon
- ½ ounces rosemary simple syrup (see recipe below)
- Sparkling water
- Rosemary sprigs for garnish
- Blood orange slices for garnish
- Rosemary Simple Syrup
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup sugar
- 3 sprigs rosemary
directions
- To make the simple syrup, combine the water, sugar and rosemary sprigs in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, turn off the heat, and let the mixture steep for 30 minutes. Discard the rosemary, and set the syrup aside to cool completely.
- To make the cocktail, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the blood orange juice, bourbon and rosemary simple syrup. Shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds. Pour into a cocktail glass filled with ice and top with sparkling water, about ¾ ounce. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary and blood orange slice and serve at once.
notes
2 blood oranges will give you about 3 ounces of juice, so plan on 2 blood oranges for each cocktail plus one extra for garnishing.
If you can’t find blood oranges, use Cara Cara oranges.
You can also use blood orange soda in place of fresh juice in this recipe, just omit the sparkling water.
The rosemary simple syrup can be made up to a week in advance. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
If you want a spicy version, add a few slices of jalapeno to the simple syrup along with the rosemary.
