Why launch a new collection like this, and why call it Trove?
Many of our customers aren’t so much about settling down in a “forever home,” but more about following opportunities to new places. They want things for their homes that are modern, fun and can easily come along for the ride. A “trove” is a collection of interesting or delightful things, and that’s exactly what this collection feels like to us.
Meet Trove: Sebastian Brauer on Our New Collection
Our newest collection, Trove, is inspired by a different international design city each season and plays to our love of travel and discovery. And as we introduce this concept to Crate and Barrel customers, our VP of Product Design, Sebastian Brauer, talked about what sets Trove apart.
Who is Trove for?
It’s for people who love the bold look of modern design and are naturally creative and individualistic. Trove is all about self-expression and functionality, and we want you to mix and match.
The idea is that each season of Trove is inspired by a modern design destination. First up was Copenhagen. How does this debut collection capture that city’s vibe?
Copenhagen is the most laid-back of Scandinavian cities, and it cradles a distinguished design heritage. The influence of the mid-century greats once eclipsed contemporary design there, but an avant garde wave of creatives have fueled an exhilarating Renaissance. You’ll see the city’s playful new energy reflected here in fresh, bold colors, sculptural furniture silhouettes, fashion-forward textiles and the art of scale. Think simple, functional forms paired with optimistic color.
If you had to choose one piece from this first Trove collection that really speaks to the concept, which piece would it be and why?
For me that would be our new Ofelia velvet dining chair. This chair has an almost cheeky personality to it—the shape is sleek and striking, it comes in three fresh colors, and it spins so you can easily turn to talk to the person sitting next to you. It’s sophisticated and playful at the same time.
Describe the color palette for this debut Trove collection.
It’s a happy palette of unexpected shades that you don’t see everywhere. The colors range from soft, soothing pale hues (like rose and light grey) to a console and tabletop we did in a really bold, lacquered teal. And then there’s the wall art—these unapologetically bright, vibrant prints in bold tones that put an instant smile on your face.
Why is this collection so compelling to a person who lives in the city, in an apartment or smaller home?
We designed these pieces with modular functionality and smaller footprints so they can really be at home anywhere (and fit through doorways when you need them to). Smaller, round tables that work in your kitchen nook, a great modern sectional called Strom that can be arranged to fit different room configurations and floor plans, office furniture that allows you to add more storage if you have the space—or not. There’s a lot of flexibility and a ton of style.
