This heirloom-quality quilt was designed exclusively for Crate & Barrel by Andrea Pettway-Williams and Cheyenne Pettway, two members of the legendary Gee's Bend quilting community. The mother-daughter duo have been quilting all of their lives, from matching fabric as children to designing textile masterpieces as they honed their skills. Mixing solids and charming vintage-inspired prints in a palette of blue hues, the organic cotton voiles and slubbed weaves add texture to the dynamic checkerboard pattern. Hand-quilted by talented artisans based on the quilters' original designs, this quilt and its coordinating pillow shams (sold separately) brings a work of art—and a piece of history—home.
Our exclusive collection celebrates the beauty, history and storytelling of quilting in America. The residents of Gee's Bend, Alabama, are direct descendants of the enslaved people who worked on the cotton plantation there. After the Civil War, cultural traditions such as quiltmaking were nourished among the tight-knit community, and the art flourished. Today, Gee's Bend quilts are in the permanent art collections of more than 30 museums.
